This owl occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, in South America and in many oceanic islands including the Galapagos Islands, where this photo was taken. It nests on the ground and often lives in open lands around fresh- and salt-water marshes. In the Galapagos, it preys on small birds, including Storm Petrels, and is said to catch birds of the size of a shearwater.
